L’enfance de John Blee passée en Inde et au Pakistan eut une influence primordiale sur la vie et l’oeuvre de cet artiste américain. La spiritualité profonde de l’art indien se retrouve aussi dans le Modernisme, Kandinsky et les racines même de l’art abstrait. Blee a eu la chance de rencontrer à Delhi, à l’âge quinze ans, l’artiste Robert Rauschenberg et le musicien John Cage. Venu à New York à l’âge de vingt ans, il y rencontra le critique Clement Greenberg, le peintre Robert Motherwell et surtout le peintre Helen Frankenthaler qui fut son amie proche et son mentor. Au début de sa carrière, les tableaux de John Blee étaient des paysages intériorisés mais seront petit à petit remplacés par des « natures mortes » qui demeurent néanmoins essentiellement abstraits. L’art de Bonnard si bien représenté dans les musées de Washington où Blee vit et travaille, a énormément influencé son travail récent. Les tableaux de John Blee ont été non seulement exposés à New York (à la galerie André Emmerich), Boston et Washington mais aussi à New Delhi, Moscou et à présent à Paris. Ses œuvres se trouvent dans les collections du Museum of Modern art de New York, du Los Angeles County Museum of Art et aussi au Musée d’Art moderne de Yerevan, Arménie.


		Living in India and Pakistan for half his childhood had a formidable influence on the art of John Blee. The spiritual nature of the art of the subcontinent echoes early modernism, Kandinsky, and the roots of abstract art. Blee was fortunate to meet Rauschenberg as well as John Cage in Delhi when he was fifteen. Arriving in New York at twenty, he met Clement Greenberg, Robert Motherwell and especially Helen Frankenthaler who would become friend and mentor in an exchange of studio visits. Early on, his work was more related to landscape, a kind of “in-scape”, and later, his work developed more into a take on still-life but retaining its abstract nature. Bonnard, seen to great advantage in the public collections of Washington, DC, where he currently resides and paints, has a important influence on these recent works. The paintings of John Blee have been exhibited in New York (at the Andre Emmerich Gallery), in Boston, and Washington, DC. Outside of the US, his work has been shown in New Delhi, Moscow, and Paris. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as well as the Museum of Modern Art in Yerevan, Armenia.
